The quiet mechanical keyboard is a real category now
Silent switches used to mean mushy switches. That trade-off has largely gone, and the reason is a small change in how the stem meets the housing.
For years the advice was simple: if you wanted a mechanical keyboard that would not annoy the room, you bought a membrane keyboard instead. Silent mechanical switches existed, but the damping that quietened them also made them feel vague.
Where the noise actually comes from
Two impacts, not one. The stem hitting the bottom of the housing on the way down, and the stem returning to rest on the way up. Early silent switches attacked both with a single soft insert, which absorbed the sound and the feedback together.
What changed
Damping is now placed asymmetrically — more material where the return impact happens, less where the downstroke lands. The result keeps a defined bottom-out while removing most of the sharpness from the upstroke, which is the part listeners actually notice.
What to expect
A quiet mechanical keyboard is still not silent, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. It is roughly the difference between a conversation across a desk and one across a room.
