The quiet case for a slow screen
E-ink is bad at almost everything a modern display is judged on. That is precisely why a second one might be the most useful screen you own.
Judged as a display, e-ink is poor: slow to refresh, limited in colour, and awkward in motion. Judged as paper, it is remarkable — readable in direct sunlight, drawing power only when the image changes, and unable to do the attention-grabbing things other screens do.
That last limitation is the feature. A screen that cannot show a video, cannot animate a notification and cannot glow at you is a screen you can put a book on and forget about. The category’s growth is mostly a story about people buying a constraint on purpose.
